Lightsplit (“we”, “us”, or “our”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect your personal information when you use our websites (https://lightsplit.com, https://app.lightsplit.com), mobile apps, and related services (the “Service”). By using Lightsplit, you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please stop using the Service.

Information You Provide Directly

When you use Lightsplit, we collect and store personal information you choose to share with us. This includes:

Registration Information: When you create a Lightsplit account, we ask for your name and email address. If you use third-party authentication providers like Google, Apple or LINE to log in, we may receive and store your profile information such as your name, email address, and profile picture.

User-Generated Content: We collect information you enter while using the Service, such as group names, expense records, member names, comments, reminders, payment notes, and any other data you associate with your account. If you share an group, expense or payment with others, they can view the relevant records. You are responsible for choosing with whom to share your information.

Invitations and Contact Information: You may invite others to Lightsplit by entering their name, email, or phone number. We use this information to send the invitation and help connect you with the invited person. Your name and group name may be included in the message.

Contact Book Access (Mobile App): If you grant permission, our mobile apps may access your phone's contact book to help auto-fill contact details when you invite others. We only collect the specific contacts you interact with—not your full contact list.

Information Shared by Other Users: Other Lightsplit users may add you to a group or transaction using your email or phone number. In such cases, the information they provide is associated with your account.

Information We Collect Automatically

When you use Lightsplit, we automatically collect certain technical and usage-related information to help us operate, protect, and improve the Service. This includes:

Device Information: We collect data about the devices you use to access the Service, including hardware model, operating system and version, screen resolution, device language, and device identifiers (such as advertising ID or app instance ID).

Log and Usage Data: Our servers automatically log standard technical data such as your IP address, browser type, referring/exit pages, time zone, and access timestamps. We also record app activity, such as buttons clicked, screens visited, and navigation flows to understand how people interact with Lightsplit.

App Performance and Diagnostics: We collect crash reports, error logs, and performance data (such as loading time and memory usage) to identify bugs and improve reliability. This may include diagnostic information provided by your device's operating system or third-party tools (e.g., Firebase Crashlytics).

Session and Feature Usage Data: We track how often you log in, how long sessions last, what features you use (e.g., group creation, expense input, subscription settings), and how frequently you perform certain actions (e.g., adding expenses, uploading images). This helps us prioritize feature improvements and detect abnormal behavior (such as spamming or abuse).

Location Information (approximate): When allowed by your device or network, we may derive your general location (e.g., city or country) based on your IP address. This helps us detect fraud, suggest currency settings, or comply with tax and platform regulations. We do not collect precise GPS location unless explicitly enabled in a future feature.

Cookies and Web Storage: If you use Lightsplit in a browser, we use cookies, local storage, and similar technologies to remember your login state, save preferences, and gather analytics. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, but some features may not work correctly.

Analytics and Measurement Tools: We use analytics tools like Google Analytics or Firebase Analytics to measure user engagement, retention, and traffic sources. These tools may set their own cookies or identifiers to understand how users navigate and return to the Service.

Payment and Subscription Information

When you subscribe to Lightsplit Premium, we collect transaction metadata such as payment processor ID, subscription plan, and billing timestamps. Payment processing is handled by third-party services such as Paddle, Google Play, or Apple App Store. We do not store your credit card or banking details directly.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

To make Lightsplit work better for you, we use cookies and other similar technologies—like web storage, pixel tags, and analytics scripts. These tools help us understand how people use the app, personalize your experience, and support the ads you see.

How We Use Data

We will not provide any of your personal data to any third party unless described in this policy or with your explicit consent.

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

To provide and maintain the Lightsplit service

  • Support personalized account access across multiple devices
  • Store and sync your data to allow consistent access and editing

  • Help your contacts identify the right account (e.g., via email lookup or invitation links)

  • When needed, our team may access your account in admin view to help troubleshoot issues or review unusual activity
  • Verify your identity before processing sensitive actions like account deletion or data export

To detect risk, fraud, or abuse

  • Monitor device and login patterns to flag suspicious behavior
  • Track access across IPs and device IDs to confirm account security
  • Automatically block or review accounts that appear compromised or automated

To improve the product

  • Using billing platforms like Paddle, Apple, or Google Play to manage Premium subscription

Any data shared with external platforms is limited to the specific purpose and will only be used in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Legal Basis for Processing (EU/UK Users)

We process personal data on the following legal bases:

Sharing Your Information

We will not, without your permission, sell, publish, or share your personal information to third parties for their marketing purposes. We will not sell, publish or share the personal information you provided for the purpose of sending user-generated invitations to third parties for their marketing purposes.

No SMS mobile information will be shared with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes and this includes your text messaging originator opt-in data and consent and personal information.

We help you track and manage shared expenses with your friends by sharing your information in the following ways:

To Provide the Lightsplit Service

Lightsplit is designed to help you track and share expenses with your friends. We share some of your personal information (name, email address, phone number, user avatar) with your friends and groupmates on Lightsplit. Someone who knows your email address and/or phone number will be able to add you as a friend and see your name, email address, and user avatar. They will not be able to see expenses that you've added with other friends unless you include them on those expenses or in a group.

Lightsplit allows you to keep track of expenses in both private and public groups. By default, private groups are only visible to members who have been added to them. Information and expenses posted in a private group are accessible only to other members of that group. However, any group member may be able to invite additional users, so it is the joint responsibility of all members to consider carefully who they invite. Some groups on Lightsplit may be designated as public. Public groups are visible to anyone with access to the group link or listing, and any data shared within such groups may be accessible to a broader audience. Please use discretion when sharing personal or financial information in public group settings.

With third parties, affiliates, subsidiaries, and service providers

We employ third party agents, subsidiaries, affiliates, and/or service providers to enable them to help support and improve our services. For example, maintenance services, database management, cloud hosting, web and mobile analytics. Third parties acting on our behalf that are given access to your personal information are contractually obligated to abide by our privacy practices and are not allowed to use the information for any other purposes. We may share your personal information with other third parties with your consent or instructions to do so.

For legal matters

We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to share or disclose your personal information with law enforcement, government officials, and other third parties:

  • to respond to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process;
  • in order to investigate, prevent, defend against, or take other action regarding violations of our Terms of Service, illegal activities, suspected fraud, or situations involving potential threats to the legal rights or physical safety of any person or the security of our network, Sites, or Services;

Non-identifiable information

We may disclose information that does not personally identify you in any other manner that we deem appropriate, including to third parties for their research, marketing, and promotional purposes and to help us determine how we can improve our Service. We will also disclose non-personal information to our service providers and other third parties about how our users collectively use the Sites.

Data Retention

We retain your data as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. After deletion, we aim to remove or anonymize your data within 30–90 days unless legally required to retain it longer.

Your Rights and Choices

You have the right to access and manage your personal information on Lightsplit. You may update your account details at any time through the My Profile page.

You can also delete your account at any time. Deleting your account will remove your data from our active systems after a short retention period to allow for recovery in case of accidental deletion or fraud. Once permanently deleted, your data cannot be recovered.

At this time, Lightsplit does not support exporting your personal data. If required by applicable law, you may contact us at [email protected] to request access to your data, and we will evaluate such requests on a case-by-case basis.

Please note that some data may be retained in backups or logs for a limited period as required for legal, security, or operational reasons.

Children's Privacy

Lightsplit is intended for users aged 13 and above. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If such data is discovered, it will be deleted promptly.

Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational safeguards such as encryption, access controls, and audit logs to protect your information. However, no system is 100% secure. We will notify you of any data breach as required by applicable law.

International Data Transfers

Lightsplit may store or process data outside your country. By using the Service, you consent to such transfers, including to countries without the same level of data protection as your jurisdiction.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. The latest version will always be posted at https://lightsplit.com/privacy. Continued use of the Service after changes means you accept the updated policy.
